Denmark hosted and participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen after winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with the song "Only Teardrops" performed by Emmelie de Forest. The format of the show featured one show consisting of ten songs where the winning song was selected by a combination of the viewers' SMS votes and votes cast by a professional jury. DR opened a submission period between 20 August 2013 and 7 October 2013 where a total of 872 songs were submitted, marking a new record for submissions and an increase of 180 entries over the previous year. A selection jury selected six songs from the entries submitted to the broadcaster, while four participants (SONNY, Nadia Malm, Anna David and Michael Rune) were invited based on editorial considerations. The ten songs taking part in the competition were revealed on 28 January 2014.
